In the 1940's and 1950's pinups were famous actresses, singers and models whose mass-produced pictures were meant to be pinned up on the walls. That's where the name comes from. Those women were called pinups and another couple of names like cheesecake girls. Maybe some soldiers said that pinups were better than cheesecake, hence the name cheesecake girls. Classic pinups include names like Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Jane Russell. Those women are still considered style icons today, and they inspired a lot of women in terms of fashion, makeup and hairstyles.
We could consider modern pinups all celebrities, models, actresses, singers, socialités because their function is the same as 40's and 50's pinups. They are part of the popular culture, even if that beautiful hint of playful innocence is lost. But there are still a lot of people who find the reality of 40's and 50's pinups enticing and who are willing to make it live through the centuries. They are the modern pinups. Those models are inspired by the the look and poses of the most famous pinups of the golden era and often live by the rules of that decade (clothes, hairstyles, makeup.) We picked 5 pinup models we think you should know about. We love pinups and we're huge fans of this art. We hope it will ride the wave of its revival for as long as photography exists!
Kay O'Hara
Kay started her pinup career in 1999 when she opened her website , that changed in Pinup Glamour shortly after. Unfortunately the members area of her website closed in 2012 and Kay is not posing as a model anymore. She continues with her creative career though she's also an author of romantic novels and a photographer. Being behind the camera lets her offer her fans the same pinup brand as the photos she offered to her customers before 2012. Kay is the modern pinup. She committed her life to the cause and we believe she will be doing it for years to come!
Heidi Van Horne
Heidi is an American actress, pinup model and writer. She's another woman who does it all: acting, film making, writing, hiking, modelling. Some of the most famous companies she modeled for are (we all know them, right?) She appeared on many tv shows including ER, The O.C. and Gilmore Girls. She's passionate about hot rods and she's often travelling the world to attend car shows and kustom culture events.
Zoe Scarlett
Zoe is a Swiss pinup model who grew up breathing and living the 50's. Her dad was a 50's enthusiast. He owned many 1950s cars and their house was inspired by the 50's. She made her first appearance in front of a camera in 2006 and the jump to the international scenes was to come shortly afterwards. She also had a "Best new comer" nomination on Swiss Television Awards in 2008. She worked for brands like Davidoff and she is probably the most known European retro model (her all being from the US!) She loves the stage and she's an awesome burlesque performer: the magazine Gala describes her as "the Swiss queen of burlesque."
Bernie Dexter
Bernie Dexter is an America rockabilly pinup model, but she's also a renowned fashion designer. If she reminds you of someone, you're right. She is inspired by Bettie Page a lot. She's married to Levi Dexter, former lead singer of 80's rockabilly band Levi and the Rockats, who is also her photographer. Bernardette started her career after winning Miss Teen San Diego County but decided to pursue the pinup style after attending the Viva Las Vegas context and getting such a positive feedback from it that she decided to make it her focus.
Bernie DexterMiss Tayva
Tayva Martinez is a gorgeous pinup model and an indie business owner. She owns Sparklelux, a brand that re-creates sought-after but scarce vintage jewelry. She has always been an advocate of beauty (thanks to her grandma, who was always looking perfect: hair, makeup, clothes and accessories.) Her mother also inspired her to pursue the life of an entrepreneur instead of an employee. Check Tayva's pictures in the gallery below. Even though she's tattooed, we think she has the most "1950's face" of them all!
